About FES Youth Studies

What are young people afraid of or hopeful about? In a rapidly changing world shaped by climate change, growing inequalities, demographic change, technological transformation, and democratic backsliding in many regions, FES Youth Studies examine how young generations perceive the development of their societies and their own futures.

Since 2009, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung has conducted Youth Studies across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Based on nationally representative surveys, the studies provide comparable insights into the attitudes, aspirations, experiences, and everyday realities of young people aged 15 to 29. Together, they constitute one of the most comprehensive longitudinal research programmes on youth perspectives across diverse political, social, and economic contexts.

Beyond describing the current situation of young people, the studies aim to identify emerging trends, regional similarities and differences, and the social and political factors shaping young people's lives. They provide an evidence base for policymakers, researchers, educators, civil society organisations, and anyone interested in understanding how younger generations are navigating profound societal change.
